Nikon D3000 Problems and Complains

This is my personal review of Nikon D3000 cameraAfter much research I narrowed my choices down to the Canon TOS and the Nikon--looking to spend under $500. I didn't need a high megapixel rating so I chose the (discontinued?) D3000.

I had used a Nikon 35mm for many years and loved the sharpness of their lenses. When I discovered that the Canon was in short supply just before Christmas, I ordered the Nikon.

It has many more features than I'll ever use. The camera seems to be of quality construction and is a bit bulky and heavy, as one would expect from a DSLR. I was happy that it could use the 52mm lens accessories from my 35mm Nikon. I often use a polarizing filter for outdoor scenic shots.

My main complaints are:

  • The flash is very weak with fall-off at just a few feet. If you're going to shoot a lot of pics indoors you'd better get an add-on flash (it has a hotshoe.)Pictures tend to come out with orange skin tones (usually correctable using computer software.)
  • Lens sharpness is just average. I hate to say it but my cheaper Canon Powershot A1000IS takes sharper pics at 2 mp than the Nikon. Also, the Canon has more "snap" with brighter colors. This can be adjusted in my computer, but why should I have to?
  • Manual focus in semi-dark or very cloudy conditions can be tricky. I shot some pics in the rain and many of them were blurry (I assume from camera shake.) This surprised me, but is correctable I suppose if I change ISO settings.
  • Getting the supplied carrying strap on it is a major undertaking. I finally gave up, threw it away, and used the neck strap off my old 35mm Nikon with metal snaps.

My opinion may change after more than a couple of sessions, but with 40 years of camera experience, I doubt it.
Some of you may find this to be nit-picking so you should make your own decisions and carefully study other user reviews.

Would I buy this camera again? The answer is probably not. I know this is a low end DSLR but for the money I expected better.
